Romans 5:15-19
15 But the free
gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much
more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ,
abounded to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one
who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in
condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in
justification. 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the
one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of
righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. 18 Therefore,
as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in
condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all
men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience
many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made
righteous.

Yesterday, we looked at Romans 5:1-11 on some blessings of
Justification. Today we are going to read 5:15-19 where Paul sketches in broad two
"realms" for the whole human race: in Adam and in Christ. All people
belong in one of these realms or the other. Consequently the founding acts of
these two realms: the disobedience of Adam and obedience of Christ, greatly
impact those who are in these realms.
Because of Adam's disobedience, death reigned all the human
race. We inherited Adam's sinful nature which leads to many outward sinful acts.
But in Jesus Christ we enter a new kingdom - we are declared righteous and we
have peace with God!
By God's grace, we have been placed in a new position. This
position is real. We have moved from the "reign" of sin and death to
that of righteousness and life. Paul later makes clear that the new status
enjoyed by the believer (justification) brings with it a new influence and
power that both has led and must lead to a new way of life (sanctification).
Thanksgiving is a natural act of such new way of life!
