Month of Thanksgiving - Day 1

103:1-12

Psalm 103:1-12
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities; who heals all your diseases; 4 Who redeems your life from destruction; who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies; 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things; so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. 6 The LORD executes righteousness and justice for all that are oppressed. 7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. 8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in mercy. 9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Have you ever talked to yourself? In seasons of low affection, do you command your heart to bless the Lord? 2015 may not be the best year of your life, do you still command your soul to trust in the Lord?

In Psalm 103 King David begins by speaking to himself that “Bless the Lord, O My Soul”. It seems likely that David wrote this while in a spiritually dry season of life. David’s soul seems to need a little encouragement!

In the fight to command his soul to bless the Lord, David reminds himself of what the Lord has done - how the Lord has pardoned him, healed him, lifted him and crowned him. David also takes himself and us back to the most pivotal event he can think of - the moment when the Lord worked powerfully and victoriously to redeem his people out of Egyptian bondage. That is the moment when God demonstrated his covenant-keeping love.  That is why David can commend his soul to bless the Lord!

When you’re talking to yourself, are you reminding yourself of what God has done for you in Jesus Christ? When the days are darkest, don’t let your soul take command. Instead,  let's follow David’s example to lift our gaze above our own circumstances and fix it upon the Lord’s acts of provision and deliverance in the past. We can also preach to ourselves that "Bless the LORD, O my soul!"
