Month of Thanksgiving - Day 21

Psalm 1161-11
I love the Lord, because He has heard
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.
The pains of death surrounded me,
And the pangs of Sheol laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!”
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
Yes, our God is merciful.
The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your rest, O my soul,
For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
For You have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from falling.

I will walk before the Lord
In the land of the living.
10 I believed, therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.”
11 I said in my haste,
“All men are liars.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brothers and sisters, the author of this psalm was greatly afflicted and therefore said in his haste that "all men are liars". Have you ever had similar experience? Often time we find our joy and faith based on people or circumstances that in the end will bring us disappointment and make us complain. As other psalm suggests, we many times are fool and forget the love and promises of the Lord. In this psalm, the author turned back to the Lord in faith and called upon His name. Our merciful Lord then inclined His ear to the simple supplications, delivering the author from death. For us, the situation may not change immediately after our supplications, but He will surely bring our soul to return to the rest.

"Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share", as is said in Hymn 364, "not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey". Do you trust in Him? Do you obey Him? It is hard to be full of faith in difficulties, but let's still call upon the Lord with "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" Let's offer our deepest thanks to the Lord, for He is the one who supplies us with sufficient faith. And let's all praise the Lord as the author did - "I love the Lord".

Month of Thanksgiving - Day 20

107:17-22

Psalm 10717-22
17 Fools, because of their transgression,
And because of their iniquities, were afflicted.

18 Their soul abhorred all manner of food,
And they drew near to the gates of death.

19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.

20 He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions.

21 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

22 Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And declare His works with rejoicing.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Among all the blessings you give thanks to God for, are you ever grateful for His word (the Bible)? Psalm 107 teaches us that we should definitely praise the Lord for His word, because "He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them form their destructions."(v.20)

Often time we find ourselves fools, rebelling against God's words, and as a result afflicted in difficult situations because of our transgressions and sin. Fool as we are, God has loved us with an everlasting love. He always heals us with His word, delivering us from the afflicting circumstances. His words comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable. His word exposes us, directs us, and compels us.

How I wish we can all sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, for the Bible He gives us and the word He has placed in us, right from this moment.

He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.

Month of Thanksgiving - Day 19

Psalm92:1-8 A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath day.

1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;
To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,
And Your faithfulness every night,
On an instrument of ten strings,
On the lute,
And on the harp,
With harmonious sound.
For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;
I will triumph in the works of Your hands.
O Lord, how great are Your works!
Your thoughts are very deep.
A senseless man does not know,
Nor does a fool understand this.
When the wicked spring up like grass,
And when all the workers of iniquity flourish,
It is that they may be destroyed forever.
But You, Lord, are on high forevermore.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unconsciously we often tell ourselves that "I have given enough thanks", or "it is enough to be grateful quietly in heart". But Psalm 92, the song for the Sabbath day tells us clearly that Sabbath is not only for us to take a rest, but to praise the Lord in congregation ("sacred assembly" in Lev 23:3). As 2 Chron 5:13 says, the trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the Lord!

It is necessary to praise the Lord with gratitude, yet furthermore, as is said in this psalm, it is beautiful ("good") to praise the Lord. Similarly, Jesus saw it a beautiful thing when Mary anointed Himself before He went to the cross. On one hand, it is beautiful because our praises is precious to the Lord. He loves our praises and thanksgivings, and is satisfied when we do so. Brothers and sisters, thanksgiving is more precious than solicitation because thanksgiving is entirely focused on the joy and glory of the Lord rather than asking for self-interest. On the other hand, we ourselves will be set free through thanksgiving - whenever we turn our eyes upon Jesus instead of temporary things on earth, we will be enabled to go through the many difficult situations.

Month of Thanksgiving - Day 18

Psalm65 Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion;
And to You the vow shall be performed.
O You who hear prayer,
To You all flesh will come.
Iniquities prevail against me;
As for our transgressions,

You will provide atonement for them.
Blessed is the man You choose,
And cause to approach You,
That he may dwell in Your courts.

We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Of Your holy temple.
By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us,
O God of our salvation,
You who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth,

And of the far-off seas;
Who established the mountains by His strength,
Being clothed with power;

You who still the noise of the seas,
The noise of their waves,
And the tumult of the peoples.
They also who dwell in the farthest parts are afraid of Your signs;
You make the outgoings of the morning and evening rejoice.
You visit the earth and water it,
You greatly enrich it;
The river of God is full of water;
You provide their grain,
For so You have prepared it.
10 You water its ridges abundantly,
You settle its furrows;
You make it soft with showers,
You bless its growth.
11 You crown the year with Your goodness,
And Your paths drip with abundance.
12 They drop on the pastures of the wilderness,
And the little hills rejoice on every side.
13 The pastures are clothed with flocks;
The valleys also are covered with grain;
They shout for joy, they also sing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion" (v1) - Psalm 65 is a group thanksgiving poem. We all know that we should always offer thanks and praises to our Lord, but for what? David brought up very important reasons behind thanksgiving.

David is grateful for God first because He is a merciful God who forgives our sins - today through the blood of Jesus and by faith we can come boldly unto the temple of God and draw near to Him. Do we share David's gratitude and perceive it as a privilege to worship God in fellowship at our church?

The world today is filled with murder, strife, evil, chaos and corruption. But David let us see that the Lord sits enthroned, surpassing all powers on earth. This vision should enable us to enjoy our rest in the Lord even when suffering. What a precious blessing from Him!

The Lord has been so good to His people and the nature that in Psalm 65 everything on earth seems to sing praises to the Lord beautifully in harmony. The author of this psalm, David, therefore cannot help singing "They shout for joy, they also sing". (v13)

Month of Thanksgiving - Day 17

Psalm 26
A Michtam of David.
Vindicate me, O Lord,For I have walked in my integrity.I have also trusted in the Lord;I shall not slip.
Examine me, O Lord, and prove me;Try my mind and my heart.
For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes,And I have walked in Your truth.
I have not sat with idolatrous mortals,Nor will I go in with hypocrites.
I have hated the assembly of evildoers,And will not sit with the wicked.
I will wash my hands in innocence;So I will go about Your altar, O Lord,
That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving,And tell of all Your wondrous works.
Lord, I have loved the habitation of Your house,And the place where Your glory dwells.
Do not gather my soul with sinners,Nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
10 In whose hands is a sinister scheme,And whose right hand is full of bribes.
11 But as for me, I will walk in my integrity;Redeem me and be merciful to me.
12 My foot stands in an even place;In the congregations I will bless the Lord.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Psalm 26 reveals us that the source of David's joy and gratitude comes from his inner purity and his pursuit of God's presence and God's temple. True gratitude is not decided by the situation outside, but rather out of our decision inside. Despite the fact that we usually only feel grateful when things work out fine, David let us see true gratification starts from an inside transformation.

David didn't spell it out for what specifically he was grateful for, but he led us to the source of being grateful - when living a holy life in Christ, our life will be full of thanksgivings naturally.
